Recapturing the "Joy of Reading"
Accelerated Reader Program at CLCS
The
Accelerated Reader Program at CLCS has generated much enthusiasm
for reading books for enjoyment! The program was implemented
in 1996 to encourage students in remedial reading to read
books to and with their parents. The primary purpose of AR
is to help the students realize just how much fun it is to
read! The students read books with their teachers, with classmates,
with parents, and on their own. Each student then takes a
quiz to check their understanding of the book. The computer
keeps track of each book that the student has read and will
award the student points for their work. The program was
expanded in 1998 to include all second graders and some first
grade students. The program has produced such wonderful results
that we now have enrolled all kindergarten sixth grade students.
This school year many changes have occurred
in the way the Accelerated Reader Program has been implemented
within the school district. Some of the changes include:
networking of the program within each classroom, each grade
level working as a team to set goals and incentives for their
students, and the fact that all students K-6 have the opportunity
to participate in the program. This has been a tremendous
undertaking but well worth it.
Along with the AR program there are many activities
that we schedule through out the school year for the students
and their parents to participate in. We would like to encourage
each parent to became involved with the development of his
or her child's reading for pleasure.
One of the goals of Chautauqua Lake Central
School is to develop lifelong learners. Along with this goal
we would like to have each student share in the joy of reading.
