Elementary News

Parents, thank you to all of you who attended your parent conference time in November.  We had a great turn out.  It is so important for children's success that there is an open line of communication between a child, parent and teacher.

In November, the primary students spent time discussing family traditions and our history.  The Third Graders held a Colonial Day.  Fourth graders went to the Seneca - Iroquois National Museum.  The Fifth graders have completed the New York State Social Studies test and all Third through Fifth graders are preparing for the January New York ELA tests.

We were thrilled to have Mrs. Marlea Brown's high school students come over to the elementary to read to our students children's books which they had created themselves.

Read, Read, Read!  One of the greatest gifts parents can give to their children is the gift of reading.  Reading is the key to your child's success in all subject areas.

Message from the Principal

Chautauqua Lake Elementary is an outstanding place where we provide opportunities for students to produce quality work, experience success and develop to their fullest potential.  We have been very busy getting ready for an exciting year when students return on September 5, 2007.  Wonderful events happen each and every day in our elementary classrooms.  The entire staff is dedicated to providing the finest education possible for all students.  The elementary is welcoming some new faces this year;  Mrs. Sue Brown will be joining the elementary this year and our new reading teacher will be Miss Paula Kaus.

Going from laid-back summer days to the structure and routine of a classroom can be difficult for a child.  If your child is entering or returning to school, you can help with this transition by reviewing all safety procedures, including; bus pick up and drop off procedures.  A new class can mean adjusting without friends who have provided a social base in previous years.  You can suggest that this is an opportunity for your child to expand his group of friends, rather than a loss of familiar faces.  Establish a time for him to spend with old friends too.  Encourage your child to select their clothes, gather supplies, and pack their backpack a few nights before school starts.  Decide where the designated study area will be.

On the first few days as you help your child to pack a tasty lunch, you may want to tuck a secret note inside.  Please listen to your child and provide reassurance.  We have a passionate tradition for nurturing strong relationships with families and giving all children a quality education.  I believe that it is this partnership between staff, parents, and the community that enable our visions to become reality.

Ella Ames,

Elementary Principal

Welcome Miss Kaus

Hello!  My name is Paula Kaus and I am the new Remedial Reading teacher at Chautauqua Lake Elementary School.  I am originally from Fredonia and I currently reside in Westfield.  I stayed at Fredonia and received my Masters degree in Literacy I.  For the past two and a half years, I taught K-6 remedial reading at Belfast Central School in Allegany County.  Besides teaching I like to cook, travel, and take pictures.  I enjoy the scenery and atmosphere at here at Chautauqua and I am looking forward to working here!
