Senior Luke Waters is the son of Dena Waters of Mayville and Joe Waters of Buffalo. Spanish and T.V. Productions are the classes he enjoys the most this year. An avid athlete, Luke has competed on the JV and varsity baseball teams since seventh grade (earning the Defensive MVP award in 7th, 8th and 10th grade and the Coach’s Award in 9th grade); the JV and Varsity basketball teams since seventh grade (earning the MVP in 9th and 12th grades and the Coach’s Award in 19th grade); and the JV and varsity football teams since ninth grade (earning the Offensive MVP in 9th grade). He was also named on the First Team all-league Varsity Basketball team this year. Outside of school, Luke enjoys playing basketball, hanging out with friends, and playing golf. When asked what historical person he admires, Luke chose Martin Luther King, Jr., because “of all of the work he did advocating for equality amongst all people.” Luke would enjoy becoming Snoop Dogg for a day because “he lives a very admirable life.” Luke plans on attending Otterbein College to study Allied Health in hopes of becoming a physical therapist. Luke also stated that “I've enjoyed my time at CLCS and greatly appreciate everyone that has helped me become the person I am today over the years.”
Wayne Swoger, son of Christina and Steve Rater of Ripley, is a junior who names U.S. history and gym as his favorite classes this year. Wayne has competed on the basketball team from seventh through tenth grades. This year as a junior he is competing on the track team. Outside of school, Wayne enjoys woodworking and metal working/fabrication. He admires Edgar Allen Poe because “I like the way he writes and he had a dark humor.” When asked who he would choose to be for a day, Wayne responded, “Kevin Denny, just to see what it would be like as a Gym teacher.” After high school, Wayne plans to “become a carpenter or a welder and then build a house somewhere remote and not a lot of people around.”
Sophomore Jenna Harle, who is often called Mini, is the daughter Mike and Julie Harle of Mayville. English is her favorite subject this year. Jenna has played volleyball for the past seven years, and started competing on the school’s once she was eligible in seventh grade. Outside of school, Jenna enjoys reading. When asked what historical person she admires, Jenna stated Alice Paul because “she was one of the main women's rights activist around the 1920's. She never held her voice when she wanted to voice her opinion and she never stopped fighting for women's rights.” If she could be another person for a day, Jenna would choose to be Rihanna because, “she has a beautiful singing voice and she always inspires me to take care of myself first and to stay true to myself.” In the future, Jenna plans to go to college to better understand why people act and think the way they do. After college, Jenna plans “to get a good supporting job so that way I can adopt a dog.”
Taylor Donato, a freshman, is the daughter of Jason and Lee Donato of Dewittville. She enjoys Geometry the most this year. Taylor has competed on the school’s soccer and basketball teams since seventh grade; this year she also played on the JV volleyball team. Outside of school, Taylor enjoys camping and playing sports. When asked what person she admires, Taylor named Amelia Earhart because “of all of her achievements.” For a day, Taylor would like to be either Paige Bueckers or Aari McDonald because “they are amazing basketball players.” Taylor plans to attend college after she graduates.
Eighth grader Alexander Estes, nicknamed Xander, is the son of Samantha Mutch and Brandin Bolinger of Ripley. He enjoys science and math the most this year. Xander enjoys playing video games, playing outside, and reading comic books. One person he admires the most in history is Martin Luther King, Jr., because “he made it so anyone, no matter the color of their skin, could become friends, and making friends is very important to me.” If Xander could be another person for a day, he would choose “someone that owns an animal shelter because I love animals.” This love for animals is also displayed in his future plans: after high school Xander would like to “make an animal shelter so all animals without homes can come stay at my shelter and have everything they need including food and water.”
Isaac Ludwig, a seventh grader, is the son of Michael and Nora Ludwig of Mayville. This year, Isaac enjoys his science and Spanish classes the most. He has enjoyed playing in the band and singing in chorus throughout elementary school and again this year. Outside of school, he enjoys cooking and playing video games. When asked what historical figure he most admires, Isaac stated Abraham Lincoln because “he helped save the slaves.” If he could be another person for a day, Isaac would enjoy becoming “a famous YouTuber like ninja or tfue, so I can get a lot of money from the people donating and subscribing.” Isaac’s future plans are to become a chef.
The student recognition program honors students in grades 7 through 12 whose classroom performance, attitude toward learning, work ethic and extra-curricular activities set them apart. Teacher Tara Reyda coordinates the secondary school recognition program with the help of a selection committee, which includes teachers Michelle Rowe and Joyce Walzer.
