Senior Rylee Kuhn is daughter of Keith and MaryAnn Kuhn of Ripley. English, Physics, and History are the classes she enjoys the most this year. Rylee competed on the school’s track team from seventh until tenth grade. Outside of school, Rylee enjoys Running, hanging out with friends, and shopping. When asked what historical person she admires, Rylee chose Anne Frank. Instead of becoming someone else for a day, Rylee would “ would want people to be me for a day, to see what I go through and what kind of person I actually am.” After graduation, Rylee is planning on becoming a nurse and one day having a family.
Sophia Shearer, daughter of Jennifer and Kenneth Shearer of Mayville, is a junior who names Calculus, Spanish and Computer Science as her favorite classes this year. Sophia is very active in academic clubs at the school; she has competed in the Envirothon and on the High School Bowl team since she was a freshman. She participated in the Science Olympiad and the Language club as a freshman and sophomore; this year as a junior she also joined Student Administration and was inducted into the National Honor Society. Outside of school, Sophia enjoys reading and painting. She admires Galileo Galilei because “he stood up for what he believed in, was a confident and creative thinker, and his name is really fun to say.” When asked who she would choose to be for a day, Sophia responded, “I would want to be someone working on the International Space Station, like Megan McArthur, to be able to see what tasks she has to do first-hand and to be able to see her perspective of the world, literally speaking.” After high school, Sophia plans on going to college for computer science and “hopefully becoming a machine learning engineer.”
Sophomore Austin Fuhs, who is often called AJ, is the son of Tammy Cassidy and Jason Erhard of Mayville. Gym, Work Based Learning, and Business Math are his favorite subjects this year. He has consistently been on the Honor Roll this year. Outside of school, Austin enjoys gaming, swimming and reading. When asked what historical person he admires, Austin stated Albert Einstein because “even though he was crazy, he is revered as the smartest person.” If he could be another person for a day, Austin would like to be Jeff Bezos, “so that I can activate my plan Housing for the Homeless. This plan includes buying land of at least 20 thousand acres of land and building 7.5 million dollars worth of houses to give to the homeless.” In the future, Austin would like to attend college and become a lawyer.
Brynn Engdahl, a freshman, is the daughter of Jolene Ward of Mayville. She enjoys English and art class the most this year. Brynn has competed on the school’s softball and volleyball teams every year since seventh grade. She has consistently been on the high honor roll. Outside of school, Brynn enjoys Travel volleyball, hanging out with friends, and professional tubing with Ava Olson. When asked what person she admires, Brynn named Rosa Parks because “she harnessed her own power even when others believed she had none by standing up for what she believed in.” For a day, Brynn would like to be Olivia Rodrigo because “she is young and an upcoming star who perseveres despite stereotypes in the music industry. She also seems to live a cool life while writing impactful and emotional songs.” After high school, Brynn plans to “Go to college, move somewhere warm, and have a family.”
Eighth grader Paige Zarpentine is the daughter of Brianne and Jeffrey Zarpentine. She enjoys ELA and math the most this year. In seventh grade, Paige competed on the modified soccer and basketball teams; in eighth grade, she competed on the modified soccer, modified track, modified basketball and JV volleyball teams. She also has consistently been on the honor and high honor rolls. Outside of school, Paige enjoys playing year-round soccer. One person she admires the most in history is Rosa Parks because “she was brave enough to stand up for what she believes in” If Paige could be another person for a day, she would choose Neil Armstrong because “I want to know what it’s like to walk on the moon.” Paige plans on attending college after high school and becoming a lawyer.
Taylyn Stanton, a seventh grader, is the daughter of Jennifer and Brian Stanton of Mayville. This year, Taylyn enjoyed Spanish, math and ELA classes the most. She has been on the honor roll all year and has received numerous academic awards. When asked what historical figure she most admires, Taylyn replied “Elizabeth Katie Stanton because she was a nurse in a war and she fought for women's rights.” If she could be another person for a day, she would enjoy becoming her dad “to try and take the stress off him.” Taylyn’s future plans are to have a good summer.
The student recognition program honors students in grades 7 through 12 whose classroom performance, attitude toward learning, work ethic and extra-curricular activities set them apart. Teacher Tara Reyda coordinates the secondary school recognition program with the help of a selection committee, which includes teachers Michelle Rowe and Joyce Walzer.
