Senior Alex Godfrey is the son of Doris and Steve Godfrey of Mayville. AP Computer Science was the class he enjoyed the most this year. Alex competed on the varsity soccer, varsity basketball, and Envirothon teams this year; he was also an active participant in the Interact Club. He was named a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist. Outside of school, Alex enjoys reading, video games, and playing chess. When asked what historical person he admires, Alex chose Plato because he “built the foundations of western thought.” Alex would enjoy becoming Elon Musk for a day “because I want to influence the world’s financial markets from Twitter.” Alex will be attending Cornell University in the fall to study computer science and philosophy.
Sydney Hawkins, daughter of Ryan and Julianne Hawkins of Ripley, is a junior who believed that all of her classes “contribute to well-roundedness. Spanish and field science are excellent courses.” Sydney has participated in a wide variety of school activities this year, and her favorites include High School Academic Bowl, Science Olympiad, Envirothon, varsity volleyball, and National Honor Society. She has earned numerous academic awards, as well as the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award, Rensselaer Medal, and Bonnie Scholar Award. Sydney admires Albert Einstein “ for the unique lens through which he viewed the world.” When asked who she would choose to be for a day, Sydney responded, “The head of the NSA, just for curiosity’s sake.” Sydney’s future plans include “Ideally find a vocation that actually provides fulfillment, as many things we do leading up to this stage in our lives doesn't suffuse life with meaning.”
Sophomore Kaylee Ellis is the daughter of Lisa Beaujean of Ashville. Spanish and Chemistry were her favorite subjects this year. Kaylee has enjoyed participating in chorus and band as well as competing on the softball team. Outside of school, she enjoys Being outside, playing music or listening to music. When asked what historical person she admires, Kaylee stated “Ruth Bader Ginsburg because she is so inspiring and devoted her life in fighting against inequity.” If she could be another person for a day, Kaylee would choose Jodi Voice Yellowfish because “she started the MMIW movement and I am so thankful and inspired by that.” In the future, Kaylee plans to go to college to study psychology.
Ava Olson, a freshman, is the daughter of Leah and Ryan Olson of Dewittville. She enjoyed art, math, and science the most this year. Ava has competed on the school’s volleyball, Basketball and Softball teams since seventh grade; this year she also competed on the soccer team and was a member of Student Administration. Outside of school, Ava enjoys snowboarding, traveling, hanging out with friends, playing volleyball, and boating. When asked what person she admires, Ava also named Ruth Bader Ginsburg “she is a champion for fighting for equal rights and against discrimination.” For a day, Ava would like to be Kerri Walsh Jennings because “she is an outstanding beach volleyball player and three-time Olympic gold medalist”. Ava plans on attending a major University to continue her education and play D1 college volleyball.
Eighth grader Cayzlee Johnson, nicknamed Cayz, is the daughter of Amy and Doug Johnson of Dewittville. The classes she enjoyed the most were science and gym. This year, Cayzlee competed on the modified soccer and varsity softball teams and also participated in ski club. 8th- Mod. Soccer, Ski Club, Varsity Softball. Outside of school, she enjoys participating in travel softball. One person she admires the most in history is Francisco Lindor because “he is a really good baseball player and is always smiling. I want to be a good softball player and always smile even when you’re losing. If Cayz could be another person for a day, she would choose “my sister because she gets stressed over college right now. I would want to take the stress off her for a day just to make her happy.” Her future plans include becoming a Physical Therapist or a Forensic Scientist.
Cameron Mathews, a seventh grader, is the daughter of Michael and Nora Ludwig of Mayville. She has been on the honor roll this year.
The student recognition program honors students in grades 7 through 12 whose classroom performance, attitude toward learning, work ethic and extra-curricular activities set them apart. Teacher Tara Reyda coordinates the secondary school recognition program with the help of a selection committee, which includes teachers Michelle Rowe and Joyce Walzer.
