Chautauqua Lake Seniors Win Big at SUNY Fredonia’s First Annual Science Bowl
Thirteen Chautauqua Lake seniors traveled to SUNY Fredonia with Science Bowl Coaches Mary Jantzi and Brian Fortney on Monday, November 22, to compete in the first annual science bowl competition. The day consisted of competing in two science laboratories and then in a final science trivia match.
In the biology portion of the event, our students learned and practiced suturing up some simulated injuries using synthetic skin. They then had to demonstrate their talents in suturing while being judged. The seniors then completed two different oxidation-reduction reactions in the chemistry lab. This lab was scored on how they made careful observations, recorded data, interpreted their results, and safely cleaned up their lab area. The final trivia portion had upper-level challenging science questions and questions based on the interpretation of the earlier chemistry labs. Each team’s overall score was calculated from the three parts of the competition - the biology lab, chemistry lab, and the science trivia game.
"Our students came home with some pretty impressive hardware and outstanding 1st and 2nd place finishes, including a perfect score in the chemistry lab portion. The extraordinary awards included four Presidential Scholarships of $5000 each, gift certificates redeemable for college textbooks, and gift cards redeemable at the university bookstore,” remarked Mrs. Jantzi. “We were thoroughly overwhelmed at the money awards these students earned for their hard work and the many talents they shared to get these. Your coaches are so thankful for you. Congratulations, seniors!” A trophy is also being sent to Chautauqua Lake to put on display!
