Mr. Binkley’s 7th graders submitted entries into the Patriot’s Pen essay competition sponsored by our VFW Auxiliary 8647 Mayville Post. All 7th grade students write a 300-500 word essay for an English class grade (it's usually our first essay of the year). This year ten students chose to enter their work into the competition. The 2020-21 theme is What is Patriotism to Me? The competition is judged based on three categories that focus on knowledge and research of the theme, theme development by relating the theme to personal experiences, and on clarity of ideas. Debbi Cenni, president of the VFW Auxiliary 8647 Mayville post is pleased to share that Brooke Feldt is the Patriot's Pen essay winner from Chautauqua Lake Central School at the local post level of judging. Her essay will now move to the District level for the next level of competition. Brooke will receive $100 cash for her essay from the Mayville VFW Post. A certificate and booklet will be prepared for each participant.
The American Legion's annual flag essay contest was held for all Chautauqua County fourth graders last April. Each of Chautauqua Lake's fourth grade students wrote an essay titled, "What the flag means to me" in class. We are proud to share that judges chose two of our students (now 5th graders) to receive first place, Aubrey Giles & Elizabeth Parker. Just this past week on November 24th, both students read their essays at the monthly meeting of the Mayville post. Each student received a certificate and $20 for their winning essays.
