NYS Regents Exam Plan for 2020-21
May 09, 2021

Regents Exams are not required for graduation

However, to comply with federal requirements, and to give students the opportunity to earn a numerical score, the following Regents exams will be administered in June 2021:

  • Algebra 1: June 23rd
  • English Language Arts: June 17th
  • Living Environment: June 22nd
  • Physical Setting/Earth Science (written test only): June 24th
  • LOTE: June 21st

Scores vs. Exemptions

A number vs. "E"

  • Students are still entitled to an exemption even if they take the Regents exam and earn a score. Students should talk to their teachers about their options.
  • All scores will be reported, but for diplomas and endorsements, we will use the score that is most beneficial.
  • Students may choose to take an exempted exam in the future.

Regardless of the Regents exam, students may still have final exams and projects in their courses. These are scheduled by the teacher. If you have questions about Final Exams and projects, it is important to ask the teacher for details.

Graduation Requirement = Completion and passing of the Regents Course

The Regents exam requirement is exempted if the student:

  • Finishes and passes the course by June or August 2021.
  • Is in 8th grade enrolled in a class leading to a Regents exam.
  • If a student who fails a course receives a passing score or an E on a Regents exam, the student will still need to do credit recovery in order to pass the course with a 65%.
  • Students with a 55% or higher in a course are entitled to credit recovery through summer school.

Diploma Endorsements Mastery & Honors

Math and/or Science Endorsement on the diploma will be met if the student:

  • Passed 3 Math/3 Science Regents exams with 85%+
  • Passed 2 Math/2 Science Regents exams with an 85%+ and Exemption on 3rd exam
  • Passed 1 Math/1 Science Regents exam with an 85%+ and has Final Average of 85%+ for the other two courses they received an exemption for

The honors endorsement will only include exams with a numeric grade

  • At least 3 exam scores needed, or
  • If fewer than 3 exam scores, regents exam scores and final average scores that are 90%+
  • If the exam score in June 2021 is poor, you can use course grade for mastery/honors endorsements calculation
