The Chautauqua Lake Central School District established the Indoor Air Quality Committee in response to concerns about student health problems. No link was established between such concerns and conditions in the new school building, which opened in September 2000. Training for the IAQ Committee, on-site investigation, collection and analysis of data, and meetings with an occupational safety and health expert were funded through the "Tools for Schools" grant program administered by the Western New York Council on Occupational Safety and Health.

Since the 2002-2003 school year, faculty and staff have received information on indoor air quality and the ways in which they can monitor and be alert to conditions in their classrooms, offices, and other workspaces.

The handbook, report form, and in-service training were created by the CLCS IAQ Committee. The committee will continue to take a proactive approach to study and avoid any possible problems with indoor air quality. They are working with the Buildings & Grounds department to be sure the district's Preventative Maintenance Program addresses air quality issues.

A reference handbook in the District Office explains the many factors which address indoor air quality.

Parents, community residents, students, faculty, and staff may consult the handbook for information to better understand IAQ.

IAQ Concern report forms are also available in the District Office. The forms may be used by staff, parents, or other individuals who have concerns about indoor air quality to call to the attention of the IAQ Committee.
