Medications Require Signed Orders

New York State law prohibits school nurses or any other school personnel from administering any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) to a student unless the Authorization to Administer Medication form is filled out and signed by a doctor and parent.

Medication to be given at school must be brought in by an adult in the container in which it is dispensed.  Examples of over-the-counter medications that your child will not be allowed to take/use without orders from the doctor are:

  • Cough medicine
  • Cough drops
  • Aspirin
  • Tylenol
  • Ibuprofen
  • Allergy medication
  • Neosporin
  • Sunscreen

Alcohol-Based Hand Sanitizer

Although careful hand washing with soap and water is the recommended method to keep hands clean and free of bacteria, alcohol-based hand sanitizer (ABHS) is available throughout the school building, including in the cafeterias.

Alcohol Based Hand Sanitizer (ABHS) is considered an "over-the-counter medication" in NYS. We have obtained standing orders from the School Medical Director to use this product. If you do NOT wish to have your child use this product please complete and return the attached form to the school health office.

The dispensers will be filled and maintained by the maintenance staff. Students are encouraged to use soap and water for hand cleaning. If this is not practical, ABHS is available for student use under the supervision of staff.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen now requires a parent's note only for a student to carry and apply sunscreen at school.  Parents are responsible for providing the sunscreen they would like their child to use. A doctor's order is no longer required.

Directive from New York State:

Schools are no longer required to obtain a medical provider order to allow a student to carry and use sun screen if:

  1. The sunscreen is used for the purpose of avoiding overexposure to the sun and not for the medical treatment of an injury or illness;
  2. The sunscreen is approved by the FDA for over-the-counter use; and
  3. The student's parent or guardian provides written permission for the student to carry and use sunscreen.

A student who is unable to physically apply sunscreen may be assisted by unlicensed personnel when directed to do so by the student, if permitted by a parent or guardian.
